The temporary fence offers little resistance to species like Florida softshell turtles. Below are photos of the sequence of events showing how a Florida softshell turtle was able to go over the 24" temporary fence. A permanent series of guidewalls needs to be at least 42" tall with a 6" lip to prevent animals such as Florida softshell turtles from climbing over.
The turtle raises its body up and braces itself against the temporary fence.
Using its long neck, it stretches over the fence and uses its forelegs to grab on to the top of the fence.
Using muscles in the forelegs the turtle propels itself forward.
This angle shows the turtle as it uses its forelegs to pull over the top of the fence.
Having made it successfully over the fence, this turtle now faces imminent death as it approaches the roadway.
In areas where turtles have frequently climbed over the low fence, we have had to install 5.5' wire fence extensions, as can been seen in the above photo.
